The 5th Summer Institute for the Languages of the Muslim World


The Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in collaboration with the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies , Center for African Studies, CIBER, Center for Global Studies, European Union Center and REEEC is pleased to host the 5th Summer Institute for the Languages of the Muslim World in summer 2013 (June 10 - August 3, 2013). SILMW 2013 is offering intensive courses in a variety of Muslim world languages, including Arabic, Pashto, Persian, Swahili, Turkish, Urdu, and Wolof.

* Out of state students pay in-state tuition for the courses offered by SILMW 2013

Only non U of I students have to fill out and submit an application to join SILMW 2013. U of I students need to register for SILMW courses using the University Course Registration System.
EXTENDED DEADLINE TO APPLY/REGISTER IS APRIL 30, 2013.
Registration will be remain open until the classes start.

All SILMW students must pay a one-time $100 program fee by June 10. The payment should be made in the form of a check or a money order issued in the name of the University of Illinois and mailed to the Linguistics Department Secretary Cathy Penny:

SILMW provides a unique opportunity to explore the languages and cultures of the Muslim World and interact with experts in this region. In addition to classroom instruction, SILMW will offer a variety of extracurricular activities designed to enhance classroom instruction, provide additional channels for language contact and practice, and expose learners to the traditions of the Muslim World communities. These extracurricular activities include research forums, picnics, conversation tables, cooking classes, music & dance performances, movie screenings, field trips, lectures and other cultural activities.

The SILMW is being organized by a committee consisting of Drs. Ercan Balci (Director), James Yoon, Rakesh Bhatt, Eyamba Bokamba, Kristina Riedel, and Eman Saadah from the Department of Linguistics.
