SILMW 2017 NEWSLETTER
June 12 - August 5, 2017
Welcome to SILMW 2017! We are very happy to welcome you to a summer of language learning and cultural experience! SILMW provides a unique opportunity to explore the languages and cultures of the Muslim World while interacting with experts on the region. In addition to classroom instruction, SILMW offers a variety of co-curricular learning activities designed to enhance and enrich the language learning process, provide additional channels for language contact, and expose students to the traditions of the communities of the Muslim World.
For the second year in a row, SILMW is also holding the Summer Intensive Arabic Program for High School Students. The program runs concurrently during the first two weeks of our Institute. This year, it was awarded a generous grant from the Qatar Foundation International which allowed us to welcome more students from across the United States and to provide them with financial assistance.
IMPORTANT PROGRAM POLICIES
LING 110: CULTURAL EXPERIENCES OF THE MUSLIM WORLD
All SILMW students must register for LING 110 alongside each language course they register for. This course, Cultural Experiences of the Muslim World, accounts for the cultural component of the language study. For each LING 110 course, the student must pay a $50 internal program fee. The SILMW internal program fee cannot be waived. If you are a recipient of FLAS fellowship or other form of sponsorship, please contact your sponsor regarding the reimbursement of the SILMW internal program fee. The SILMW administration is unable to officially credit your coursework until you have paid the program fee.
SILMW-2017 offers two short, but intense summer sessions: June 12 - July 9; July 10 - August 5. Instruction for SILMW courses is scheduled 4-5 days a week (depending on the level of language). Due to the intensive nature of the SILMW instruction, the amount of material covered daily is comparable to that covered in one week of foreign language courses during the academic Fall/Spring semesters. Therefore, it is very important that you attend all classes.
